Look Who's Here!!!

And no, not baby Sophia!

It's Ian's mom! Her first trip overseas to see us and her first time EVER to see her first grandbaby, Grace!

We're over the moon excited and are looking forward to the next three weeks of spending as much time with her as possible. We're all a little tired and I think mom especially will sleep good tonight!

Ian's especially glad to see his mom, it's been over 2 and a half years!

Momma Mia!

My Momma is here!!!

We had planned on it for awhile, but it just so happens to fall on the weekend that I really needed my Momma. Good food, fun conversation, and watching of The Nativity Story always is fun. More to come from our weekend later!

Boo-lated Halloween

haha, I crack myself up!

We spent Halloween with a friend of mine from high school, Kelly, and her boyfriend Kean. We ate dinner and watched The Office, then dug into our "non competitive," pumpkin carving time. Ian and I decided on a batman theme, since I had done Transformers the year before and it had turned out pretty well! Kelly and Kean decided on doing a fancy University of Florida logo. They both turned out great!
I also had a fun time handing out fistfulls of candy to the trick or treaters....being "the cool apartment," is alot of fun!

The Interview

I really haven't been up to much, so I don't have an excuse for the lack of posting, except for, it's been pretty dull around here so my posts would sound like this :

"Not much is going on around here. I have plenty of options of things to do to entertain me, and I don't really feel like doing any of them. And for some reason, the things I DO want to do, all need money, so those aren't really options right now. *Sigh* We're jonesing for some tv."

Yup, and that would be about it for the last four or five days.

But hopefully today will be a little different. You see, yesterday, I had TWO interviews, praise God. The first one was for a sixth and seventh grade math position, but for only two periods, but you get sixty percent of the pay and you have no classroom. I did well in the interview, but I am really hoping they pick someone else so I don't have to reject them. I hate rejection.

The second one was much better but a little stranger. It's for the next county over for a school that services only 3rd-5th grade, but it has over 500 kids! 11 3rd grade classrooms, doesn't that blow you mind? Anyways, it's out in the middle of nowhere, but is only a 20-30 minute picturesque drive. The position is for replacing a teacher who is leaving on maternity leave in the next month or two and would become a permanent position for the rest of the year. So, essentially it would be my classroom come Thanksgiving. Only hitch is, since the county is so, um, close knit, they don't just hire anyone. You have to become, like, family, before they will hire you, so I have all of this paperwork to do to become a substitute.

Luckily, they are acting like I will get the job. They introduced me to the teacher leaving, as "the teacher who will probably be taking over your classroom." I got to sit in on her class for 2 hours, which made me realize even more how much I miss it.

I'm counting it as a blessing though, that I will have to wait a month or two. I needto brush up on the 3rd grade (since I never had an internship there,) and on my English as a Second Language techniques since there are TWO boys who speak absolutely no english.

I also have a ton of paperwork that I want to get sent out, like, pronto. So I think Ian and I are going to tackle that today.

Not alot of housework to do, since Ian and I did most of it yesterday. We also had a delicious dinner of Morroccan chicken and hummus, with brownie and cherry frozen yogurt sundaes yesterday. Sam came over for dinner and Friday night activities, which included working on our insane puzzle and watching The Office/Tristan and Isolde. I fell asleep before 11 but I think those boys kept at it for another 2 hours.

Now to find some breakfast.

Remember Norway?

Do you remember our Norweigan friend, Svein? Hop back to posts in mid to late July to read about when he just popped in for a little visit. He was a very amusing house guest, that's for sure.

About two weeks ago I heard that he was leaving friends in southern Illinois on bike. Not a motorcycle. A ten speed. A USED ten speed. And guess what he was planning to do.

Bike the Mississippi River. Just for kicks and giggles.

Oh. my. word.

Well, I just got word that our friend left Memphis...on his bike... for New Orleans late last week. RIGHT BEFORE Gustav! Please, use your imagination, of our blonde haired blue eyed friend riding his 10 speed down the Mississippi towards the hurricane. Of course, he isn't staying in hotels or anything so he has absolutely no idea what is going on. He probably is having a great time, pedaling away, using his new found "people watching," skills at the thousand of cars heading the opposite direction as him.

Poor soul.

Next on our list is to get a hold of him and let him know that northern Mexico is not the place for him to ride his bike. Drug wars and kidnapping running rampant as they are. *Sigh* He'd probably jsut think it was all part of the American experience.

There and Back Again...

A Brittney's story.

Sorry it has been so long. Well, I am only partially sorry.

It has been so busy around here that even our sleep is suffering!

On Wednesday we left for Georgia to visit Ian's grandparents in northern Georgia. It was a very short drive from here and then we just spent time hanging out with them for a day and a half. We drove back on Friday in the middle of Fay, and came home to an apartment without power-but it returned shortly, just in time for me to start a mountain of laundry.

Saturday, my wonderful parents came for a visit. We spent the day driving around, showing them our new church, our work places, and such. Then, miracles of all miracles, my momma bought me a trash can! Now all of you who were worried can breathe easier. It was a big day because we hung our graduation diplomas!

Today was also a big day because Ian and I officially joined our new church and started teaching a sunday school class in the college department. For me, the next three days will be a whirlwind or work, which is good. Tomorrow, Ian starts his new regiment of class at 7:30 so I have a feeling he will be a little grumpy until he is used to the early rising.

Until there is a break in the schedule, I will probably only have short little updates telling you what I have been up to. Pictures will be uploaded later this week.

A little more conversation...

Yesterday turned out to be an okay day as well, which was kind of unexpected. Ian had his first day of class, so he was out the door pretty early and Svein wanted to see the apartment complex's many ammenities.

I showed him the mailboxes, and explained how we drop off our mail, which was a great surprise to him. Apparently, his mail people won't take mail from people. I asked if that was because the mail man drove a boat among the fjords. Apparently, that's not really the case.

Then we hopped across the road to our lovely trash compactor. Except... it was broken and taken away for repair so signs told us to put our trash in the dumpster. Small problem....no dumpster. So we just neatly laid it on the ground NEXT to where the compacter belonged and I told Svein that we wouldn't get arrested unless the police traced the trash back to our address. He was slightly concerned.

Then, off to the clubhouse and pool! When going through the front doors of the clubhouse, I pointed out a police posted sign for a wanted man- "Hey! That's our lawn man!" He did NOT think that was too funny. Mainly because he thought I said "Law Man," like a governor or mayor. So I untangled that conversational knot as we stepped out onto the pool deck.

Here was a little less eventful. We laid out in the sun, read our books, and occassionaly jumped into the pool to cool off. I did, what is a perfectly acceptable sport here in fine America. People Watching. The watering hole is a great place to see a collection of interesting people.

Apparently, people watching is not an international sport. In fact, Svein was quite concerned that I would get caught watching other people, and informed me that it was considered very rude where he came from. I told him that, of course, I don't STARE. And continued to teach him the subtle art of people watching where you glance here and there in order to figure things out about the people around you. And...if someone decides to stare back at you, then, and only then, if you are brazen enough, may you stare back.
The middle age group of women who intently watched me back because I was reading a Christian novel that they recognized (A voice in the wind.)

The mom with two sons who must be fresh off the boat from Japan. They were very good swimmers though.

The young family with their baby daughter who they insisted wore a GIGANTIC sun hat that she could barely keep her head up with.

And then, a foreign family with 3 young boys. I had seen this family before, and was very intrigued. The father chooses one son to work with, and "coaches" him on swimming technique for hours. The poor boy of choice is very obediant and does lap after lap while his other brothers and other pool children play. The only thing is, their accent is unidentifiable. I thought that maybe it was italian, but decided it wasn't. Then Svein joined in and helped me rule out Greek, Russian, and Romanian. We finally decided it was probably Hungarian. I am glad that I taught Svein something important from the US. People watching is a skill that every body should learn.

So here's to happy "pEEple wootching." What kind of interesting people have you seen today?
Currently, my husband is explaining the many *benefits* of eating raisin bran. A conversation I am glad to be not a part of.

YOU try translating "Hash Brown" to a Norweigan

I have had a great couple of days with our house full and our days packed. Ian and I talked last night, and we really think that the gift of hospitality might be one of our gifts, and we just love hosting people in our house.

After Saturday night's rather strange turn of events, I went to bed early. We woke up early too, so I guess it's good that I got some sleep. We tried a new church here in town, but it ended up being a complete disaster. Besides taking our friend with us (which, you know, puts a little more pressure on the church you are visiting,) the music was horrible, the preaching only surface level, and the congregation seemed detached and unparticapatory. We will keep searching.....Please pray that we can find the new church home that we are looking for. We know no church is perfect, but we want a place where we can be challenged and also serve at. Our first church visit might just be that place.

Anyways, we came home and grabbed a sandwich lunch, then headed out to a UF owned lake. There we could rent kayaks, canoes, or paddleboats, go swimming, go on a ropes course, take wakeboarding or sailing lessons, or use their fields to play- All of this for free! As long as you have someone with you that has a UF ID. I'm really excited, because we love to do outdoors activities, but do not have the money to pay for some of them right now.

So we kayaked for about an hour, than swam and jumped from the dock, then headed over to the other side of the lake to play some frisbee golf (not my first pick, but I like to try!) but were stopped by those famous Florida afternoon storms.

We came back home, got showered and cleaned up, then I made a big taco dinner for everyone. Katie K, I used your wonderfully delicious nacho dip recipie, and it was a hit! Then, we headed out to give Svein a truly American experience, the movies! We saw Wall-E, which was so incredibly good, and a laugh out loud kind of movie. I would recommend it for any age group!

My big sister comes for a visit on Wednesday, and I am really excited for some girl time! Also, our dear family friends leave this week for China to adopt their new baby boy "Jack." Keep them in your prayers. ALSO my close friend Jenny has her Olympic trial this week for running. Hopefully we will see her on the tv screen very soon!
