What I Love Lately: Preschooler Edition

I have a few products and activites that have helped us get through a rough summer and I thought I would share them with you.

Grace is 3 years old and Sophia is 1 year and 11 months old (almost 2!)

Food: Frozen Fruit, specifically, frozen blueberries or grapes. It's HOT here and I love anything that is cool to help them chill out after a hot car ride. The blueberries are very messy though and can stain clothing, so they usually eat these without their shirts and with bibs (skin will get stained as well.)

TV Show: We've watched far too much TV this summer, but I'm okay with it because we've found some fabulous shows that they learn from, interact with, and talk about all the time! We love:

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood- A spin off of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, but updated and animated for this generation, this show addresses so many social and emotional issues that little toddlers and preschoolers are bombarded with. Sharing, frustration, being too small to do certain things, or being sick and needing rest, plus many more. They all incorporate catchy tunes that your child will remember when in similar situations. I've caught Grace singing "When you're feeling frustrated, take a step back, and ask for help!" many times. And Sophia growls like a tiger whenever she wants this show. Ha. We get our episodes off of iTunes on our Apple TV and love them! Grace also loves the clips of real kids doing something that is connected with the episode after each short 11-13 minute episode. Free on Amazon Prime

Wonder Pets- Put out by Nick Jr. many years ago, this was a show that I remembered from my nannying days. Cute classroom pets go on adventures to safe animals in perilous situations. Exposing them to a huge variety of animals, a large vocabulary (Grace knows what Sumiya is- a Japanese style of painting, from this show,) problem solving, cute songs, and is safe for even the littlest viewers (no villains!) We loved finding episodes about animals we had read about or about places we were going- like finding a Greece episode set at the Parthenon! Free on Amazon Prime

Music: Elizabeth Mitchell. This folksy singer is putting out music as part of the Smithsonian's attempt to preserve American folk music and reinvent the music for a young generation. I love so many of these songs, and those that are new to me are catchy and fun. We often listen to it while the girls are taking a bath- it helps control the chaos and loudness that they often fall into. They know the songs by heart and Grace can be heard singing them by herself sometimes. They may be raised far from the shores of the USA but we want to help them understand their heritage and past and music is one of the easiest way for them to learn about that right now. Can be found here or on iTunes

Books: We don't have libraries here and our city has very few book stores. So, what we have on our shelves is often all we have. Though we have a great collection of books and it grows with every holiday or birthday, it can get old reading the same books so often, as I think we get through our entire collection every day or two. I have an amazing friend here that used to be a preschool/kindergarten teacher here and she has an awesome collection of books that she has let me borrow from each week this summer. Sort of like our own personal library! I kept these books in a canvas bag out of reach of the kids and brought them down only when I was reading with them or in their room, to ensure that they were well cared for. Three of our favorite books this summer were:

Aaaarrrgghh! Spider!, Walking through the Jungle, and Pinkalicious

Toys: I didn't grow up with them, so I will admit, I am a novice and not very creative with them, but Lego Duplo's are a huge hit in our house. Sophia likes moving them around and knocking things down but can not quite put them together yet. Grace loves building and inventing and has a very specific idea in her head when she starts creating. I'm excited to grow our collection some this Christmas and even more excited for when Grace moves up to regular, small sized Legos, as I think it will open up so many doors for her creativity! Ian is amazing at playing, building, and creating with them so I often save this as a "when Daddy gets home, guess what you can do!" activity. We do have a rule to keep them on our carpet in our family room so that the noise isn't unbearable when they clatter out onto the tile.

Baby dolls and accessories also a big hit with both girls and when I am needing a little relief and mommy time is when I send them upstairs to be little mommies. We have a stroller and baby crib that gets used every day and most times their toy baskets are dumped out and makeshift beds are made for the extra baby dolls. My beloved American Girl Bitty Baby gets played with every day and I am getting closer and closer to telling my parents they can get the girls their own. But first I want them to be able to dress the dolls themselves. Because they bring them to me all day long asking for a wardrobe change and it just drives me crazy.

Activities: Bathtime is made more fun and lengthened by the addition of bath crayons, music, story time in the bath, or even water color paints (check them on your grouting though first and make sure it comes off!) Cooking is a crowd pleaser with our girls as they both get stools to help from and can do many of the basic tasks like pouring, stirring, and cracking eggs. Grace loves playing I Spy and both girls love a good dance party, especially to Frozen music. Coloring is becoming more loved with dot markers, crayons, or markers. Puzzles are fun as well, and Grace can do a 24 piece while Sophia is still working on a 3-4 piece cut out shapes puzzle.

Outings: We live in a mall oriented culture out here. Seriously. Everything is in a mall. Almost nothing is free standing. Grocery stores, pharmacies, movie theaters, restaurants, banks, and even medical facilities are all located in a mall. Most of the time we go to a mall to get out, even though we aren't doing much shopping. For awhile the girls were getting a treat every time we went out or went to the grocery store but I've tried to cut back on that because now they expect it! Our malls are massive, with wide walk ways, indoor playgrounds (and theme parks!) and places for the kids to move. They can even bring scooters or push cars in if they want, but I'm waiting until our kids are a little older and can understand respecting other people's toes and personal space.

If I Had the Time....

Life has been pretty busy lately, which, if I was honest with you, I really enjoy. But it has been so busy that I have even been skipping my afternoon nap! Which is saying alot, since I haven't missed this many afternoon naps in almost 2 years. It got me thinking...

If I had the time, I would

Finish Reading: The Three Musketeers- I am loving Alexandre Dumas' book. It's a bit of a behemoth though, which can be a little overwhelming if you let it. I like it because each chapter is an adventure in its own and leaves me wanting to read the next. I get in one or two chapters at night before I call it quits but I'd love to have an afternoon to myself to just sit and read and make real progress.

Begin Reading: It Happened in Italy- I saw this in the Kindle store one day and it really sparked my interest. I have always loved reading stories about Holocaust survivors and the resistance movement, so this book is right up my alley.

Watch the TV show: Downton Abbey, season 2. I borrowed season 1 from a friend last winter and loved it! I like historical pieces and I really like when dramas are very well done. It's a mini series but the episodes are like movies and the characters are really intriguing! I'll probably wait to buy the show off of iTunes until after Sophia is born and I am glued to the couch, nursing for half of the day!

Rent the movie: The Hunger Games. I read the trilogy before the movie came out and even got Ian to read them. I really enjoyed them and wish we had been able to see the movie in theaters, but it was not possible at the time. To do before baby comes: Date night in with husband!

Play: Monopoly! This should go right along with my date night, though I don't like to play games while watching a movie for the first time, because I like to have my focus fully on the movie. I LOVE playing Monopoly and was overjoyed to rediscover our own game in our crate!

Talk to: my sister, my mom, my friends! Alot of people. It's really hard now that school has started back- my family and friends are all busy and because of the time difference (we are 8 hours ahead of the east coast,) most people can only talk on Saturday morning their time! I can usually only fit in one or two conversations a week then, because there isn't enough time talk to everyone in one day.

Cook: a lasagna. I'm not really sure why, but lasagna has been on my mind alot lately. I haven't had a really good lasagna in years and I might be craving it. It just takes so long if you make a really good one! I miss frozen lasagnas- they are good to me!

Bake: Chocolate Chip Cookies! I could bake and eat these every day for the rest of my life. I LOVE cookies more than almost any baked good. I've got a great recipe that turns out perfectly, but I would really love to learn to make chocolate chip cookies like Subway cookies :)

Clean: Our windows! Since moving in to the house, we have not cleaned the windows and the desert sand is everywhere on them! It's so hot outside that I don't think I could handle cleaning the outside though, so I have put off cleaning the inside because, well, what's the point cleaning one if the other is going to be caked in sand?

Visit: the salon. I desperately need a haircut but I haven't found out where a good salon is here yet. My hair needs to lose about 3-4 inches for it to be healthy again. I stopped trimming it on my own about 5 months ago, thinking I would get a hair cut back in June, but it just hasn't happened yet. My curls will look so much healthier as soon as I can get it chopped. And while I am at it, I'd love to get a pedicure and a massage too. Hey, a girl can dream!

Create: a nursery! I've sorted through Grace's baby things and have piles of stuff that is just waiting for Sophia's furniture to be put into place. After that, I can add a few cute touches, but first, I need to find some time to do all of that!

A Perfect Night In

Last night was the start of one of our two long weekends that we have while here in Canada. We're not allowed to use any of our vacation times during our training (which stinks, believe me,) but we do get two, no holds barred, no work, long weekends!

Ian and I are among the losers who do not have family coming in this time (or next,) so we tried to think of a few touristy type things that we hadn't had time to do. We have great plans for these 72 hours of free time.

However, I hadn't really planned anything for Thursday night.

So, first I hoofied it home from the grocery store with a million plastic bags (forgot my cloth ones,) cutting off my circulation for 1.2 km (which believe me, is alot longer than it sounds.)

{Handy map reference, A being my home, B being the store. So, I went from B to A, because I'm different like that. And right about where it says "Garden Center," is where I duck my head and try not to make eye contact for 2 blocks. On account of the surplus of weirdos and sketchy people.}

Right, so I collapsed in a chair back home after making it back from that perilous journey. Did I mention I did it in the rain?

While wearing flats.

And carrying a purse that had 4 books in it.

Because you never know when you are going to finish one and need the other.

yes, I'm that person. Sorry.

Ian joined me about 2 minutes later from the train (also in map, see Surry Central Skytrain.)

and asked me what was for dinner.

Now, I had just bought all of the ingredients for homemade Cajun Chicken Pasta, but I really wasn't in a chopping mood.

So, instead, I whipped out the $1.97 Curry Paste I had just discovered and chopped half of the thawed chicken, two potatoes, and threw in the paste.

Presto, Curry!

Ian and I read blogs (me,) and news (him,) while our curry simmered and then got comfy on the couch to watch a movie while we ate.

Selection for the night.... Anne of Green Gables!!!

My husband is awesome.

I had borrowed the dvd series from a friend, and when Ian saw all three discs, he asked me if it was a tv show.

No, silly husband, it's just your worst nightmare!

I read off the viewing times on all three discs (182, 238, and 196 minutes,) and he had a heart attack then and there.

Then, he awoke to the deliciously spicy aroma of homemade ish curry and fell in love with Anne and all of her wonderful ways.

He also decided that Rachel Lynde was why a certain foul word was developed. haha.

And, he also got over the fact that I LOVE Gilbert.

He was a little disturbed at first, but accepted it once I told him that "you're my Gilbert, honey!"

hahahahahaha

Oh, Gilbert.

So, three hours later, and he's still married to me, which I think is a good sign. We basically said goodnight and I fell asleep, with him joining me an hour or so later.

It was an absolutely perfect night in.

And I didn't even do the dishes!

Ahh, Romance

I've taken on a new habit of watching Romantic Comedies late at night as I'm blogging and catching up on writing.

Yesterday, was Picture Perfect, with Jennifer Aniston, which ended up being really cute! There are few romantic movies that just make my heart swoon, but for some reason I was SO into the male protagonist in this movie! I mean, I usually won't admit it, but sometimes I really wish that the guy would NOT end up with the girl. Just for kicks and giggles.)

And, tonight, or as I type this, I am watching Notting Hill, because I have a soft spot in my heart for Hugh Grant.

And England.

And for books.

And traveling.

But I digress.

Somehow I've gone all of these years without seeing it. But I did own the soundtrack. Don't ask.

And I'm really enjoying it, but I don't think I'll be able to finish it all tonight. Much too late.

And, all of these "chick," flicks have gotten me thinking of my favorites. They would be, in no certain order:

Return to Me

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

A Walk to Remember

Sweet Home Alabama

The Notebook

Miss Congeniality

and many others.

I'm looking for some new chick flicks to watch late at night...any suggestions?

On the Big Screen

One of my favorite things about summer, is the movies! Nothing beats the summertime blues than heading to the theater to watch a summer blockbuster.

I must tell you I am a big Indie fan (independent movies, that is, not the Indy race) but I prefer to view those type of movies in the privacy of my home....they tend to have much more to reflect on and think over.

Ian and I try to, as a rule, stay away from R rated movies. That doesn't mean that we won't go see one if it has gotten excellent reviews and the R rating is explained reasonably, but we try to protects ourselves somewhat from the ridiculous "culturalization," that occurs.

I tend to have an eclectic taste when it comes to movies. I love me some romatic comedies, but an action movie is just as exciting! The Horror/Thriller genre I stay away from, because I don't want to wet my bed (duh.)

Mystery/Suspense can come out really great, or really horrible, so that is always a coin toss. I wait until I hear raving reviews before I head out to that type of movie.

Anything Historical I will probbably like (darn you, Mom and Dad, for dragging me to almost every Civil War battlefield on the Eastern coast!)

Dramas are also a cointoss, not because they won't be good/interesting, but because it's very possible they are incredibly predictable and redundant.

And kids movies......well, Pixar/Disney are must sees, no matter what. It's Disney! And I'm a Florida girl, through and through, (though I will admit to not going to see Bolt. Shame Brittney, Shame!)

Teeny Bopper Movies- No thank you, I have never EVER been a fan. Except, um, The Lizzie McGuire Movie. What? Can't a 12 year old enjoy herself?

I'm sure I left out a ton of genres, but that's alright, because I covered enough. So now, ladies and gentlemen,

Brittney's Movies-To-See in 2009!
(insert trumpets and fanfare)

Transformers 2- Uh, hello! The first one was amazing, please tell me you have seen it!
Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince- Uh, yes, I will be Netflixing the rest to be reminded
UP- Going this weekend to see this one!
The Proposal- Sandra Bullock= Hilarious. Anyone a Miss. Congeniality fan?
The Ugly Truth-Kinda like a reverse Hitch...PLUS, I adore Gerard Butler (Phantom!)
Post Grad- Because Alexis Bledel/Gilmore Girls is my favorite
Gamer- Because....well... I just have a feeling I'll get dragged to this one by my husband and FIL

alright, this last one isn't released until October 16th, so it's not really a summer movie, but I am SO excited!

Where the Wild Things Are!

Oh, please oh please oh please, go here and watch the trailer, and let me know what you think! I love how they have captured so many of the illustrations into real life! It looks good!

Let me know if there are any big movies that I missed!

Paradise

Last weekend, Ian's parents treated us to a night at Paradise.

Actually, it would be considered my second paradise.

My first would be Hawk's Cay Resort, down in the Florida Keys. Seriously, who wouldn't want to go HERE? (I'm thinking that if I brag about it enough, SURELY someone will give me a free stay, right?)

So, second paradise. As I was saying, Ian's parents were staying the weekend at the Portofino Bay Resort at Universal Studios, as their getaway weekend. So, for our one year anniversary (next month,) they treated us to a night at the hotel, and dinner and a movie!
The whole hotel is themed in the Italian genre, though I really don't know much about decorating. I will say it was beautiful, with people waiting on you round the clock, which is my kind of hotel stay!

Now, the theme parks are all about 30-45 minutes away for us, so you would think that this wouldn't be very relaxing.....but it was!

We arrived to our room after a little incident. You see, as we parked our car and grabbed our luggage, Ian's bag of hygeine stuff wasn't inside his suitcase. And mind you, he packs like a man, so his "bag," was really just a plastic grocery bag filled with all hygeine items. So, I, being the wife I am, told him I was going to put the ever so embarressing grocery bag inside of his backpack (because who doesn't bring a hiker's pack to a 5 star hotel?)

Well, while stuffing that grocery bag into his bright yellow back pack, I felt a tug on my thumb, and quickly yanked my hand out. Seconds later, my poor little thumb was gushing blood. Just as my father in law met us to escort us to our room, I was having to cup my bleeding hand to not stain the '5' star carpet. Sheesh.

My sweet Father in Law thought a bandaid would help, so of course he asked the concierge. I didn't have the heart to tell him that that little ol bandaid would not "stop the bleeding." So we rushed up to our room, and while I was cleaning my thumb up, Ian was digging through the back pack to discover the culprit. It was his razor. Darn it. Seriously! Who just throws a razor (as in- full of razor blades,) into a plastic bag? Anyways, it sliced right through the bag and my thumb, and after about 15 minutes I was all bandaged up and headed down to their cabana by the pool.

Yes, I said cabana.
And, we had a cabana boy.

Haha, actually it was more of a cabana "middle aged man," but it's all the same. I had me a pina colada smoothie (non-alc, don't fret,) and fell into a dozing stupor for the next hour or so.

We got up and had dinner at an italian place on the piazza, with a guy singing opera on the balcony above us.

Seriously.

It was some sort of performance.

All I cared about was my pizza however, and couldn't give a rip about what the large man with the mic was singing about. Bring on the next round!

Then we took the water taxi (isn't that cute!) to Universal City Walk, and went and saw the new Star Trek, which I really liked!

The next morning, we woke to find texts from his dad saying to order breakfast in. Faster than...um...any normal person in the morning, I recited to Ian what I wanted from room service, because, who doesn't read over the room service menu when they first check in?

The attendant came in to deliver our breakfast, as I feigned sleep, and set up a cute table and chairs by our window, for us to eat at.

Next we headed to the theme parks. I love me some good theme parks. And I am especially fond of the Florida ones, but I might be a little partial. Ian's parents also found a great deal at Costco on Universal tickets- for the price of a one day, one park ticket, they got us a 2 park, 3 month pass!

We spent the day riding rides and chatting it up with his folks.

Until......dum dum DUM...... we went to head back to CityWalk for another movie. We watched Wolverine, which was pretty good, and then I noticed my pass was missing! If you know me, or have read this blog for long, then you probably know that losing things is my biggest pet peeve. I hate feeling so irresponsible. I usually lose my head a little when I lose things, and it might be the only time you truly see me enter into panic mode. So Ian and I retraced our steps and then took the water taxi back to the hotel. By this time it was about 8 on Sunday night, and so all the offices were closed, so we couldn't find out about getting a replacement.

(for those of you who are worried like I was, don't fret. We called the next morning, and after cross checking our information, they told us it could be printed up at guest services the next time we came!)

So, naturally, we headed over to PF Chang's (one of my all time favorite places to eat!) for some Mother's Day dinner. Ian's older brother, Sid, and his fiance, Carly, and Ian's younger brother, Andrew, met us for dinner, and we ordered family style. After dinner, Ian, his parents, Andrew, and myself all headed back to home. It was a whirlwind of a 24 hours, but it really was wonderful!

10 Things I Love About....

Summertime!

May really is the beginning of summer to me. Though here in Florida, it really begins to heat up in March, I try to lump February/March/April together to achieve some semblance of a 'spring.'

I am a Florida girl, through and through, and though I may be moving all over the country/world, I will always call Florida my home!

So, without further ado, here is my list of

10 Things I Love About Summertime:

1. The Beach

This pretty much goes without saying, but I will say it, just in case you didn't know! In Florida, as a peninsula we are surrounded by beaches. The West Coast is nice for wading in and relaxing on beautiful sand beaches, while the East Coast is all about the waves and activity. I am much more of an East Coast girl, and have had my stint with surfing and what not. I had a shark scare a couple of years back and am a little more cautious about the ocean now though.

We don't swim in the lakes here. You know, because of the alligators/water moccassins/deadly amoebas swimming about. But I did as a child. Weird, I know.

2. Flip Flops

Ah, flip flops. We pretty much call anything without a toe and a back a "sandal," and I don't know too many southerners who would call it a "thong," without wanting to provoke a smile. I loved the "Reef," variety back in my high school/early college years, but have moved on to something a little more sophisticated, and, albeit, blingy, nowaday.

They are worn from March to December.

3. Movies

For whatever reason, all of the wonderfully fantastic movies come out during the summer! I am super excited about Wolverine, Harry Potter, several chick flicks, and am trying to learn to stomach that "Star Trek," one, because, let's face it, I married a Trekkie.

4. Barbecues

There is nothing like a barbecue cooking, country music blaring, croquet/volleyball playing kind of evening. It just seems so magical. Except when you tell me to turn on the grill and I about have a panic attack. The one time I tried to help my sister turn on a grill, there was some sort of small explosion under the lid. I don't ever want to attempt it again!

5. Late night walks

Ian's neighborhood (the one we are moving into in a month,) is great for taking late night walks. There is a playground where you can sit on the swings and talk, a gazebo for more sitting and talking, and a dock out onto the lake for more sitting and talking under the stars. Plus, it's good exercise to burn off all of that food you just consumed at the barbecue!

6. Tans

Now, I am not all about going out and getting a tan on purpose, and within the last year, I have become very concerned about how my skin is treated when out in the sun, but MAN, do I love being tan! I tan pretty easily thanks to my native american heritage, and can look almost brown after a long summer, but I do take much more care of using SPF lotion on a more daily basis, and I never EVER do the beach thing without SPF. I just like how that tan/pink gives you a little bit of a glow, it makes you look healthy! (even though I know it's not!)

7. Slurpees

This has been a post beach treat since I was able to drive, and man are they delicious! I am really more of a plain cherry kind of girl, and am not too fond of mixing it all together. I will sometimes layer cherry with coke, and MAYBE another flavor, but I wouldn't stir it all up. My friend Rachel loves to put a bunch in and stir it all about!

8. The 4th of July

Nothing says "Hey, I'm American," like the fact that you celebrate Independence Day! Barbecues, watermelon, apple pie, outside games, swimming, sparklers, and fireworks, all make for an eventful, tiring, and happy occassion!

9. Summertime music

Oh just you wait. Coming soon to Witheagerhands will be my own Summertime Music Recommendation list! You have to have "summer," music, and should definitely not confuse it with spring/fall music. Sheesh, people!

10. Hurricanes

All right, all right, before you go all postal on me, let me explain. No, I do not like the actual Hurricane. And no, I do not like the fear it causes in people. And NO, I do not like the damage it causes to people and the way it tears people's lives apart.

But you know what? I love how it brings people together. Whole communities work together to put their town back together, neighbor helping neighbor. And for those who aren't directly effected by the ravages of a hurricane, but are within the path of danger, literally DAYS are spent indoors together. It really is a family bonding time. My senior year of high school, four hurricanes hit within a month, and we missed so much school, but we spent SO much time with our parents and siblings (and my friend Jane who spent most of the time with us!) It was just a time of growth and unity.

That's it for now! I have a whole list of "10 things," posts, coming up soon. Keep your eyes peeled. (wow, that's a weird saying.)

On Hold, and a Little Random

The rest of the Europe Revisited posts will be coming later this week, I promise. For now, I present to you a little brain potpourri (a mish mash of my thoughts) :

____________________
Ian and Sam are watching "The Butterfly Effect."

The deranged minds in it made me ill. Seriously.

I had to walk out of the room, however. There is something about seeing the stark possibility of evil in humans that makes me literally sick to my stomach. I remember, as a child (okay, up until age 17 or so,) any lifetime movie depicting a wife beater would throw me inter a complete breakdown. I remember we were watching one with the actress from "Christy," and when her husband started beating her, I just had a meltdown, begging for it to be turned off and crying.

Even thinking about it, and the movie that I just saw a part of, makes me want to throw up. My problem is, that I keep thinking it's going to get better, that they are going to show the good redemption of people, so I don't leave, but, unfortunately, that's not how the real world is/the hollywood producers are.

Jessica and Katie came up for a visit yesterday, and it was absolutely, positively wonderful.
We went out to Moe's for a delicious 5 dollar burrito, then came back and played some Wii while our stomach settled/deflated before we got into our swim suits and lounged by the pool for almost 2 hours!

We came back and made dinner to eat with Ian and Sam, played some Settlers of Catan, the girls left for Orlando, and I fell asleep on the couch watching the boys play wii.

My handsome husband carried me to bed.

:)

Tomorrow afternoon is Ian and my interview for a new job prospect, at 4. It's a three hour long interview/meeting and I am not too nervous-but I am somewhat! We also finally got into contact with the rep in the Middle East, who would be our direct supervisor. I think we have a skype meeting on Friday morning, which will be interesting.

What?!? You haven't tried Skype?

Still?

Seriously?

You need to.

It's free!

Ian and I used Skype for the year when he was overseas and I was here in the states. It's free ( which is why it's fabulous,) and you can see the person you are talking to! It's also really easy to set up! You set up a Skype account just like you would for an AIM account, and make sure you have a web cam and a headphone/mic set, and BAM, you're ready!

I recently conversed with my folks up in TN on it, and let me tell you, it was a hoot!

Tomorrow is my "laundry day," where I plan on ironing about 20 things. Yuck. I hate ironing (right Mrs. Emily!?!)

Friday is a beach day. Can you say "Praise the Lord, Hallelujah?" I can. and it common vocabulary around here come Spring time.

More on Spring Time later.

Saturday is my dear friend, Courtney's, bridal shower! Which begins the real wedding festivities before her May 9th wedding!

Alright. Is your mind confused yet? I hope not. Just a little Potpourri for ya.

VDay Recap- Part Two

We left off on our Valentines day story, with Ian and I getting back from hiking around 3:45.

We had a 5 oclock reservation.

Ladies, need I say more?

I took the quickest shower/shave, I think I have EVER taken, so that I could get out and let my hair air dry (I can't use a blow dryer on my hair, it would be a total afro!)

Luckily we were out the door by 5, and were only 10-15 minutes late for our reservation. Ian had called ahead and let them know, and it was no problem, because we were their first set of reservation, so it wasn't like the place was packed out yet.

Where did we go, you ask. We went to this cute little gourmet bistro/Italian place called Leonardo's 706. It has a really neat atmosphere and theme inside, and they placed really relaxing music (Jack Johnson anyone?) the entire time.

Since we had just finished our barbque lunch two hours earlier, we weren't exactly famished. So we split a Thai Chicken Pizza, Garden Salad, and a glass of wine.

I'm not really a wine connoisseur, mind you. At all. In fact, I pretty much hate it. That and beer. And that's the only two "alcoholic," drinks I have tried. It just does not taste good to me. I've talked to some other people, and they said the same thing! That they wanted to try it, but once they did, and they realized they did not like it, they see no reason for forcing themselves to drink. I guess that's where I'm at.

Then we headed to our mall, so I could pick out my present. And home to watch Return to Me. Anyone seen it? It was my all time favorite movie in middle school, for whatever reason, and sometime I forget how long ago that was! Ian loved it though, so that is always a plus when it comes to chick flicks. Return to Me has a great cast, and is very funny, on top of being a chick flick, that is. And I am not going to say anymore on the movie, because the plot is semi predictable, and I don't want to give it away to anyone who might want to rent it.

Oh La La- Take Two

Turns out tonight was "oh la la," worthy!

A pseudo date with my husband with a quiet dinner, a movie, and ice cream afterwards. And I say pseudo, because Sam was there, but it still was alot of fun.

We went and saw Defiance, which was about a family that protected a bunch of Jewish people in the Russian woods during WWII. It was SO well done. And great. And like everything I would have wanted in a movie.

Did you know, as a child, I was somewhat obsessed with WWII and the holocaust? No? Well, I was. I read everything I could get my hands on on the matter, and knew much more than your average 9 year old on the topic.

Right. So the movie was great, and I would recommend it. The whole theater was enthralled, which I think is the most fun to go to. There were collective gasps, and laughs, and the applause at the end made it all worth it.

Except for that annoying guy behind me, who thought it was a good idea to tap his foot incessantly. It's not, by the way.

Then, a run out to the car in the cold rain, and over to a local ice cream/coffee shop to chat and eat.

And now, I am sitting cozy on our couch, while said husband plays a video game (Brawl, Heather!) and am waiting for the load of laundry to finish so I can go to sleep.

A very good weekend. AND I have tomorrow off.

AND I just finished my book.

*sigh* all is right in the world.

Oh La La

Fancy Schmancy day yesterday. It was tres incredible (pronounced Tray On Cre Dee Bluh for all of you wanna be French speakers,) and alot of fun.

Started my day by waking up at my friend Katie's house, where we dined on Toaster Strudel's and water for breakfast before dashing out the door to the bridal store.

Our friend, Courtney, is getting married to her college sweetheart, Sean, in May, and several of us are bridesmaids. So off to the super store of bridal things to try on the dresses she had picked out for us. They are yellow (I know, I am very afraid of it too! Hopefully I can get some color on me before May 9th,) and cut at the knee, and look beautiful!

Then, off to lunch at Chili's where I had the Delectable Cajun Chicken Pasta. Yum.

Drove back to G-ville and continued my Fancy Schmancy day.

Ian and I went to our friend, Sam's apartment, for dinner and a movie with him and his roommate Andy and Andy's girlfriend Allie. We wined and dined and then took in an Opera.

I know. Aren't we just the fanciest?

Okay, so it was Phantom of the Opera, but they had never seen the movie and they LOVED it!

Today = not so fancy, but that's alright. With sunday school, and church, and teaching sunday school, and eating homemade chicken noodle soup, and taking a Sunday afternoon nap, and sleeping through our Sunday school leadership meeting, it has all been a very busy day.

Now, we are going to eat some cereal for dinner and go see the movie Defiance with Sam and Andy, on gift cards.

Because we are not rich people.

Just fancy-ish.

"all by myself"

  • Ian is "up up and away," on his way to Budapest for a field trip for his Masters program. Quite a pricey field trip if you ask me.

Anyways, so I am left on my own, pondering the many things I am going to do with all of my free time. I'll start my week off by going to work in the school tomorrow and teaching a lesson using the book "Casey at the Bat," which is one of my alltime favorite children's poems, check it out! Then I am off to Orlando/Oviedo, to visit for the weekend. I should probably coordinate stuff, but I'll finish this post first.

Other things on my "things to do in order to fill the time" list, includes:

  • cleaning the floors (exciting eh?)
  • finish reading "The Giver" series
  • Read the new Jon and Kate Gosselin book
  • update my blog more often
  • Comment on other people's blogs
  • Watch ridiculous movies that Ian has no desire to watch with me but would probably watch just because he is sweet like that (camp rock, august rush, music and lyrics-don't scoff I'll enjoy every minute of them with my tub of cookie dough, that's right, TUB.)
  • Keep making those ornaments (pictures to come later.)
  • Get excited about girls weekend next week!
  • See what these video game systems are all about. Sam has two of his systems permanently stationed here, so I better learn to like them.
  • Get caught up on my Grey's Anatamy and maybe, maybe, Amazing Race
  • Write some letters to some deserving girls *cough* Courtney and Madison *cough* who so lovingly wrote me back. I was excited to tears to read their sweet notes.

More to come on the week of loneliness/productiveness

Predictable..

I spent my evening hanging out with my husband. We watched an unnamed, totally not dorky television show, had a delicious dinner, and then began my fun.

Cleaning....with Christmas music. I don't know what it is about the music, but it just seems to urge me on. I guess because I associate the music with the Christmas season, preparing fot our celebrations, and all of the busyness that comes with it. I just clean so well with it on.

Wish I would have taken a "before and after" shot of the apartment. For now, it looks sparkley and clean.

On the forecast tomorrow...staying out of the way of the crazy UF and LSU fans. Tennis. Baked apples. Reading The Great Gatsby. Pancake dinner. Working on my annual Christmas ornaments/dreaming up Christmas cards. Watching Persuasions, the movie. Getting our rings cleaned and checked out. Evening walk. Florida game.

Oh, and of course the Georgia game.
Sounds good to me.

Tappity Tap

Tonight for the first time, I watched the movie, The Fugitive.

Great movie.

But here is my question I have been pondering.

Why, in the world, do cops always seem to have the tappiest tap shoes at the most disadvantageous moment? Seriously. They are creeping around a hotel laundry room with creepy bags hanging from the ceiling and even creepier, a man with a gun, and his shoes TAP on the floor.

Now, I am not saying they have to wear shoes like the ones pictured below. That might be a little over the top.

But, really. Couldn't cops find somesort of balance? A non tappy shoe with structure? I think so.

Oops. My bad.

So, I read over my last post, and I realized that once I got on my rabbit trail, I never got back on to explaining how AMAZING Batman was.

Yes, it was creepy. But in a good way. The acting was absolutely incredible, the transformation that the actors took on to portray their characters was mind boggling.

The sets and action were really good too.

And the plot. OH the plot!!! Okay, I am not going to say anything about the plot. But I will talk about the moral dilemma that it presents.

IT was a movie that really made me think,"If I was in this situation, would I make the right choice, could I put the greater good above my own personal gain?"

The audience was enthralled. You gasped together, laughed together, and clapped together.

The hushed silence that filled the air as the movie started showed the anticipation that they all had. Even the kids. But, I digress.

So if I accidentally convinced you to not go see it.....

Bazappy!

There, did I convince you to go see it?

It's really really good, I promise. You'll sit on the edge of your seats and be gripped with anticipation with how it is going to end.

Creepy McCreeperson

I had a day full of weird people. Maybe "full," is a little strong, but let me tell you about it, and you can decide.

So Ian and I pull into the gas station to fill up, when we notice this homeless man. Now, there are alot of homeless people around the 75 on and off ramps here in Gaines-Vegas, but that wasn't the creepy part. The Creepy part, was the fact that behind his back he was holding an aluminum baseball bat, and kind of lurching around. As you can imagine, I was not happy about being left in the car while Ian "filled her up," but, eventually my fear that the strange hobo man was going to walk up and smash our windshield to smitheriens (sp?) proved incorrect, because he crossed the road to the best western. I figure he's gonna get a nice night's rest.

We went and saw Batman today. It was CrEEpy. I can NOT believe parents took their children in to see that. I am so glad that my parents protected me from PG-13 movies until I was ready to see them. I understand that some kids are ready a little earlier, but SERIOUSLY! This is not the time to take your 9 year old to the movie. Try HSM 3 in 3 months. But not this one! Seriously people.

Hmm. That was definately a rabbit trail. The point was, that the movie is very creepy. And shows true evil. and is going to give me nightmares for weeks. Maybe I wasn't ready to see that!

Tomorrow we have church in the morning, and then, in the afternoon, my first official shift at Borders. Now, during my training, I did learn that there are alot of blogging rules, so I may not be able to tell you alot about my job here. But I will refer to it in code.

I'll call it.... The bookstore. :)

Lol. Think that's code enough?

YOU try translating "Hash Brown" to a Norweigan

I have had a great couple of days with our house full and our days packed. Ian and I talked last night, and we really think that the gift of hospitality might be one of our gifts, and we just love hosting people in our house.

After Saturday night's rather strange turn of events, I went to bed early. We woke up early too, so I guess it's good that I got some sleep. We tried a new church here in town, but it ended up being a complete disaster. Besides taking our friend with us (which, you know, puts a little more pressure on the church you are visiting,) the music was horrible, the preaching only surface level, and the congregation seemed detached and unparticapatory. We will keep searching.....Please pray that we can find the new church home that we are looking for. We know no church is perfect, but we want a place where we can be challenged and also serve at. Our first church visit might just be that place.

Anyways, we came home and grabbed a sandwich lunch, then headed out to a UF owned lake. There we could rent kayaks, canoes, or paddleboats, go swimming, go on a ropes course, take wakeboarding or sailing lessons, or use their fields to play- All of this for free! As long as you have someone with you that has a UF ID. I'm really excited, because we love to do outdoors activities, but do not have the money to pay for some of them right now.

So we kayaked for about an hour, than swam and jumped from the dock, then headed over to the other side of the lake to play some frisbee golf (not my first pick, but I like to try!) but were stopped by those famous Florida afternoon storms.

We came back home, got showered and cleaned up, then I made a big taco dinner for everyone. Katie K, I used your wonderfully delicious nacho dip recipie, and it was a hit! Then, we headed out to give Svein a truly American experience, the movies! We saw Wall-E, which was so incredibly good, and a laugh out loud kind of movie. I would recommend it for any age group!

My big sister comes for a visit on Wednesday, and I am really excited for some girl time! Also, our dear family friends leave this week for China to adopt their new baby boy "Jack." Keep them in your prayers. ALSO my close friend Jenny has her Olympic trial this week for running. Hopefully we will see her on the tv screen very soon!
