Survival

We have nine days left until our move and we have officially entered into "survival mode."

We work ourselves to the bone every day and collapse into bed, exhausted.

But it's that great kind of exhausted, the one where you know there is light at the end of the tunnel and that good changes are about to happen!

Our window unit AC started dripping about a week ago. Drip, Drip, Drip, all night long.

So we put a towel under it and hoped for the best. But that dripping sound continued, even with it dripping onto a towel.

So we got inventive and stuck a sheet in the corner of the AC unit so that the water would move down the sheet and just be absorbed by the towel.

It worked for a couple of days and then the humidity happened. Living in the desert, we aren't much used to any humidity, and our has been 70-85% lately! Shocking, really, since we've lived here for 2 years and haven't seen that happen. Well, the humidity made the drip turn into a constant gush of water.

Gush, Gush, Gush.

And wouldn't you know it? I had already packed and moved all of my extra linens and towels. So we used the few that we still had here to absorb that gushing flow. And I still didn't want to call a repairman. Because we only had 2 weeks left, and I didn't want to pay for a repair that we'd only be able to use for 2 weeks.

Even if an AC repairman here only costs 12 dollars. I'm so serious.

So we lose sleep, and mop up lots of water on the floor, and change buckets out periodically so that we aren't under water.

Oh, and Ian and I have to use Grace's baby towels when we shower. I use the Winnie-the-Pooh hooded towel and Ian has a nice pink butterfly hooded towel.

It's a really special time in our lives.

I finally broke down today and asked to get the repairman here. Less than 8 hours later and our AC is fixed, blowing cold air again, with no water features.

Another happening around our household is our insect issue. Remember when I said I found a termite tunnel in a door frame? Remember how nonchalant I was about it?

Remember how no one bothered to mention that termites SWARM at night and can FLY?!

Yeah.

I remember.

So one night last week, I was sitting at my computer when a bug hit me in the face and fell on the floor. I asked Ian to clean it up (really, it was more like "GET HIM! Kill HIM!") and went back to my computer. Something caught my eye and I noticed another bug on the wall. I pointed it out to Ian and he dutifully went about taking care of it.

While he was cleaning up the bugs, my eyes got bigger as I noticed four more bugs on the other wall. I surveyed the room and I saw that they were multiplying, and quickly.

All of this took place in less than a minute.

We had about 30 flying bugs in the room and I was in a pregnancy/woman induced hysterical breakdown over the bugs and we had the presence of mind to realize they were
1.) attracted to the light
2.) coming from the front room

So we quickly shut the door to that room and cleaned up the mess.

And by "we," I totally mean Ian, because I was the one sobbing at the computer, googling "termite swarm."

Luckily, no more got through to us, and in the morning there was a pile of about 500 dead bugs right by there tunnel.

I was traumatized, to say the least.

Apparently the termites that have wings swarm for several nights, trying to find their mate. They only have 5-15 minutes to mate and get back into their tunnel before their wings fall off and they die. They can't bite or eat anything, so they are harmless (physically, though I may be emotionally scarred for awhile.)

So every night we close up the front room and every morning, Ian goes in an vacuums up the mess. The first night was the worse and there haven't been as many since then.

I should probably call someone or let the landlord know, but, again. 9 days left in this house guys. And the house is entirely cinder block, except for the door frames.

(anyone seeing a pattern about me not wanting to address issues because we only have so many days left here? Because I am.)

And the cherry on top of my "I'm moving, I don't have to take care of it," denial has to do with our kitchen. Our oven/stove is gas powered, and every 6 months or so we have to replace the gas tank. It costs less than 6 dollars, but is a pain in the butt to replace.

The last time we replaced ours was in February.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

Yes. Our gas tank is running out/ already out.

And yes. I have so much on my plate that I really don't want to mess with getting it replaced. SO, what does any sane person do?

Say "No more cooking until after we move!" That's what!

Plus, that gives me a chance to pack up the kitchen even earlier!

We're having to get a little creative with our meals (cereal, meals that can be made with hot water, microwaved things,) but we are cleaning out our cabinets, so that's nice!

Like I said, we've entered into "survival mode." but it's a good thing, because in less than two weeks we will be on our way to our new home! We figure, we might as well have a few laughs along the way. Even if it means laughing at ourselves :)

Nursery Reveal

For some reason (that not even I could explain,) today was my ultimate deadline for having the nursery completed.

We have had the furniture for over two months, the room was already painted {just like the rest of the apartment,} and we got our wardrobe made over a month ago.

Somehow, the final pieces of the nursery were just taking awhile to fall into place.

I blame it on the fact that I have to cross an international border in order to purchase quality made things.

And also on that whole "money," thing.

Oh yes, that.

This was not really a nursery on a budget.

Not because I'm against that, but simply because our options are very limited here. I am unable to just order things that are on sale and have them shipped to our house, or peruse local stores until I find the best deal (I miss Target!) or even hunt through garage sales or consignment shops.

Instead, we have about four options for home goods:

Baby Shop, which is similar to a Babies R Us, is where we got our crib and changing table from.

Ikea, that Swedish metropolis where you can furnish your entire house from one store, is where we got our rug, frames, mirror, bookcase, and daybed bedding.

Land of Nod is where we ordered our bedding from along with the daybed pillow covers. We ended up paying about double the price in order to get it shipped overseas but I'm really happy with it!

Pottery Barn Kids, where we bought our canvas containers, curtains, changing pad, cover, and day bed crib skirt.

Like I said, four options, and we utilized them all!

So, it all came down to today. The frames needed to be hung, the mirror placed, the bookcase put together, the rug rolled out, and the crib and daybed bedding put out.

Amazingly, we got it all done in less than 3 hours.

The room is just what I wanted. Lots of natural light, non cluttered, with those tell tale girlish touches of pink. It's a haven, a place that is relaxing, laid back, and calming. Exactly what I think a nursery should be!

So, here is Grace Madeline's nursery, all ready for her to arrive!

{View from the door, looking in. Changing table houses her current clothes (newborn right now,) and all of her diaper changing gear.

Love the rug that is covering up part of our crazy blue patterned tile. Neutral and super soft!

Also, her curtains were probably our biggest investment piece, as they are blackout curtains. Here in the desert, I'm not concerned about the light coming in (I love sunlight!) but I am concerned about how hot it can get in the summer- 125+! The insulation on these houses aren't the greatest and since all we have is a wall unit in our bedroom and hers, keeping the house cool is a big priority!}

{Another view of the left wall, with changing table and bookcase. All that's missing? A pink canvas hamper, which I can't find anywhere!}

{I'm loving how the bookcase turned out! The pink canvas bins hold her toys, the top set of books are hers, and the bottom set is all of my pregnancy and parenting books- at least until her collection of books overtakes it! The CD player is all ready for some lullabies or play time music and the top is ready to hold my cup or snack while I nurse.}

{The crib is a sleigh bed crib with thicker slats that I just love. The bedding has three different coordinating patterns and was classy with a twist of modern edge without having any characters or animals on it, which I was trying to avoid.}
{Last summer, when we were living in Vancouver, Canada, I eyed this sweet bunny rabbit in a bookstore, longing for the day when we would find out we were expecting. The day that we found out Grace was on her way (August 14th, 2010) we headed to the bookstore and scooped her up. Grace is our sweet little "bunny," and there are touches of bunny rabbits throughout the room.}

{Her sweet crib in the afternoon sun. You can see the three different patterns on the bumper, sheet, and skirt, here.}

{Oh, the prints. I've had these prints picked out for over a year. Made by Etsy seller Trafalgar's Square, they are whimsical with beautiful colors and tiny details that make them so special. I already have my prints picked out for baby #2 (and #3!)}

{Since we didn't have room for a rocker or glider in this room, mainly because the twin bed had to stay in the room, I knew I wanted to make it into an incredibly soft a relaxing place to cuddle and nurse! The down comforter is SO soft and I'm especially proud of the skirt, which I tailored from a Pottery Barn Kids crib skirt that I found on sale for 10 dollars! Tons of pillows help you to just lean back and relax!}

Fire Drill

This morning was.... a disaster.

I was sleeping blissfully in bed, having an extremely odd dream (trust me people, I could keep this blog alive on my strange dreams alone,) and was snuggled contenedly under the covers.

A loud, wailing siren pierced the early morning, and I, like any normal human, leaped straight out of bed and ran to the kitchen.

Duh.

Disoriented, but having discovered it was indeed the fire alarm in our building, but not in our individual apartment, I quickly stumbled back to the room.

But it KEPT GOING.

So, pivoting in our doorway, I was torn between acquiring my most needed glasses, or getting a coverup on before heading outside, because people, it was a FIRE alarm! And, I have to admit, I was oddly excited that I would have a real incident to blog about.

My lovely husband, all the while, has barely stirred in bed, and at this point says "is that the fire alarm?"

I'm just about to make a sprint for our bathroom to get my glasses/contacts (I'm nearly blind people!) and my wedding rings that are in my drawer (are you kidding me? If I slept with those suckers on, my fingers would be the size of a hot dog in the morning!) when, all of a sudden, the fire alarm ceased.

It stopped!

Darn it.

My husband grunted and rolled over to go back to sleep, and I was left standing in our doorway.

My heart was racing, my eyes were open, and I was ready for some action!

But, alas, nothing happened.

Everything was quiet in our building

And, I was left awake.

At least I had something to do! (blog)

Oh, sheesh.

It stopped!

Roll on By

The days are really flying around here! My last two months of unemployment seems to have rushed by so quickly!

As we enter the month of May, in a few days, I wanted to give you a heads up of all of the crazy happenings that are coming up for us here.

May 2nd- Ian graduates from the University of Florida with his Masters in International Business!

May 8th- Courtney's Rehearsal and Dinner (I get my hair done on this day too! :/ )
May 9th- Courtney's Wedding!
May 10th- Visit the Portofino hotel with the inlaws and spend some time at Universal! Mother's Day!
May 11th- Fly to Richmond, Virginia, for a week of interviews and meetings about our new job! Maybe see my sister at some point?

May 16th- Fly home to Orlando, and drive back to Gainesville. Katie's Birthday!

(in these two weeks in between, the apartment must be totally packed for our FIVE *FL to FL, FL to TN, TN to VA, VA to TN, TN to overseas! * impending moves, and everything painted and deep cleaned!)

(we also have things we definitely want to do around here before we leave, like see the Natural History Museum, head out to Crescent Beach again, go to the UF owned lake for wakeboarding/kayaking, eat at some local restaurants, camp in nearby Ocala. Sheesh.)

May 31st- Must be totally moved out of our Gainesville home, and into my inlaws home for the summer

So, needless to say, though I may be VERY busy over this next month, I don't think I will be short on blogging material! Things will probably definitely slow down once we get to our hometown, but we will be surrounded by friends and family, so I am excited about that!

Please be in prayer for an easy transition, and that God will continue to give us good attitudes about moving in with the folks. Also, pray that God will bring about odd jobs (lawn care, pet and house sitting, babysitting,) for Ian and I, as we don't want to be financial burdens during this time.

Easter in a Nutshell..Or Eggshell

Happy Easter!
or,
Happy Resurrection Sunday!
(this one is a new fangled term to me.)
I'm all for celebrating the resurrection of my Lord and Savior, but I get a little hesitant in the renaming of a holiday. Sure, calling it Resurrection Sunday, is calling it exactly what it IS. But is using that term more edifying and unifying instead of calling it Easter?
We had a nonChristian come over for lunch today, and someone in the group said "happy resurrection Sunday!" I about fell out of my chair when I saw the shock and misunderstanding pass over his face. I guess it's fine to say that in church, but I think there is more tactful ways to say "hey, I'm a believer. Just wanted to let you know."
whoa. What a bunny trail.
hahaha, get it? Bunny?
hardy har har right?

Alright, so after my tangent that has left many of you confused, let's move on to a recap of our Easter!
Ian and I were late, of course, to church. It's a really annoying habit that we honestly are trying to break. We're always just 30 seconds late, but that's too late, if you ask me! Usually, I'm ready first, standing around waiting on Ian, then he gets ready just in time to leave EXACTLY on time, and then I forget my ring.
or my purse.
or my planner.
Or my shoes.
So it's usually "my" fault, but in all reality it's a little bit of both of us.
So we find seats in the back of our church, after pulling out more chairs from rooms for visitors (we were packed!) Our music minister had to jet because his wife had just given birth the night before but he had wanted to be there for the music part of the service. I took roll in our Sunday school class, then blasted out of there to go home and put the ham in the oven.
I had a minor crisis when I could not figure out if I was supposed to leave this plastic disk on the ham or not. Then I removed it and read the teeny tiny words "remove before cooking." Good thing I removed it to read it!
Got the rest of the food ready, and was working on the last dish or two when the class pulled up. We had about 11 people come over for lunch, and it ended up being alot of fun!
Ham
Mashed Potatoes
Green Beans
Corn Casserole
Homemade Yeast Rolls
Deviled Eggs
and a beautiful dessert buffet!
Our guests hung around to play some pick up football out in the field, some mario kart on the wii, and even had a guest pass out into a Sunday afternoon nap on our floor (which, technically weirded me out a little, but I guess it showed he was comfortable!....... or bored. hmmm)
Our guests left around 3, I got caught up on some blogs and then walked out into the family room to find a surprise! No, not an easter basket. Ian comes from a family of very little holiday traditions, and he doesn't really get these things.
It was a playstation 3! Not ours of course, but our good friend Sam left it at our house for my enjoyment this week! Plus his bluray copy of Planet Earth! I'm very excited. Ian is excited because now he can play "worms," all he wants.
Kyle, remember Worms? I remember summers of staring at your computer screen BEGGING for you to play any other game because I thought it was so dull. Turns out, I still hold that same opinion.
We spent our evening lounging, reading, watching Planet Earth and River Monsters (on Animal Planet,) and play "worms," and "pixel junk monsters," (my favorite!)

Welcome to our Spring House! I love my Target wreath!

My "Robin's Nest," a la my Parker bowl (via Mrs. Angela,) some paper grass, and candy eggs!

Our Easter table setting. First time I got to use the table cloth. Too bad it doesn't really fit on our round table when the extension is in :(

This is my centerpiece. I decided I wanted to start an Easter tradition, and this is what I came up with. Every Easter I will put 3 candles out to represent the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Two smaller candles will be added to represent the fact that Jesus came once, and that He is coming again!

Errands

Yesterday I spent my day running errands.

Now, that may sound boring to you, but I love accomplishing something on a list.

Checking it off.

Check
Done
Complete
Finito
Hullus

Yessssss.

Right. So yesterday I got up, made Ian's lunch and dinner for him to take with him, showered, got the apartment ready for some fire inspection, and headed out.

My first stop, the Christian book store.

You see, when I was 18, I got my first credit card offer from my favorite Christian book store, and after talking to my parents and my sister, and after realizing my best friends were getting it (haha, oh boy,) I applied and received the card. Now, you may be wondering what this has to do with my errands yesterday, but hang in there, I'm getting to it!

Three years into having the card, and receiving the awesome 10 dollar gift certificates as spending bonuses, the book store dropped the card, and it was then run by MBNA. bummer. No more gift certificates. And I didn't want to get rid of it, because I had done amazing with it, earning myself a great credit score, and I didn't have any other one.

THEN, the bookstore sent an apology note, for dropping the card, and....12 ten dollar gift certificates!!!!

Unfortunately, I can only use one a month. But still! That's ten dollars off of an item that is usually 13-15 dollars!

I plot out well in advance what each gift certificate is going to.

This month, I bought "The Five Love Languages," because I wanted to make sure I had it in our library.

Next month? The new Gosselin book, of course! It is released on the 14th, I believe. AND I have a 20 percent off coupon, which will make it free!

Right. So, I went to the bookstore, then drove over to our mall to get my Clinique powder. I took a quick jaunt to the food court for a sub, then walked the long way back to my car. It was gorgeous outside!

Off I went to the bank to deposit my husbands paychecks.

Then, off to Target for some toilet paper, air freshener (the damp stank is back in our apartment,) and some shampoo.

Finally, last stop of the day, I headed to get my oil changed! Shame on me for waiting so long. I also made the oil guy right down all of the necessary maintenance, because they keep telling me some liquid is a horribly wrong color, but I keep forgetting which one!

Usually I am really nervous going to the oil place because I get a little creeped out. Luckily, I had a really nice man helping me today and the process went smoothly.

I drove home, unloaded the car, and decided to clean up my little car.
I've had my car for 6 years (can you believe it Mom and Dad?) and I usually keep really good care of it. But, having a lack of garage and driveway here in an apartment complex, it's upkeep has been waning. I spent a good hour cleaning, scrubbing, detrashifying, vaccuuming, and washing my car!

I love, love, LOVE, having a clean car. Especially because it makes it look so much newer!
The only thing my car needs is a new set of floor mats.
Other than that, it would look brand new!
I love my car.

More on my car later, I promise.
Aren't you on the edge of your seat?
No?
That's a shame.

Then, I came inside, and completely crashed for about 45 minutes. Then I worked on some paperwork and getting caught up on some emails.

It was a great, productive day!

Found!

While cleaning out my dungeon of a closet, you will never believe what I found!

Paintings!

When I was in Paris, I bought two little paintings of The Arch de Triumphe, and the Eiffel Tower!

And, apparently, tucked them away in my folder of kindergarten art work.

Duh.

And though I have looked enviously at my momma's prints that I brought back for her, I totally forgot about the ones I bought for myself.

Did I mention that trip was in 2006?

Sheesh.
And did I mention that the blue/green/gray's in these paintings will look amazing with my Pottery Barn bedroom when matted and framed?

I am so excited!

St. Patrick's Day

Funny how a big a "holiday," can become here in the US, isn't it? I find it amusing how we'll use any excuse to party.

Me? Well I did absolutely nothing today. And by nothing, I mean I kept myself busy inside the house for the entire day.

Woke up still not feeling good (I started feeling nauseous yesterday and dizzy,) and made myself go back to sleep until almost nine. Woke up still feeling like I was going to fall right over, but I made myself get up and eat something, before tackling the big project for the day.

You see, this weekend, Ian and I finally unloaded all of my teaching stuff from the car. And then it just SAT in our beautiful office, making it look and feel very cluttered. So, today it was my job to unpack, sort out, and reorganize all of the books, including the four boxes going to my friend Olyvia (I hope you have room!) And then, naturally, it made me feel like cleaning out other parts of the spare closet, like my arts drawers, and organizing my stationary and correspondence material.

So I got all of Olyvia's books boxed up and put out by the door, and organized all of the books I would be keeping into three different age groups, and got SoMe of the closet put back together....

And then I got bored.

And distracted by a subproject.

And figuring out how to bake a potato in the microwave for my dinner (what?!? we don't eat potatoes ever!)

And now it's 11 o'clock at night and there are boxes, and crates, and the vacuum cleaner, and our old TV, sitting in the middle of our beautiful office. And husband keeps tripping over stuff.

But that's what tomorrow is for!

PS: I think I figured out I was somewhat dehydrated. I drank two glasses of water and within half an hour I felt perfectly fine. Which was weird, until I realized I have drunk nothing but milk for the last four days. Darn it.

The Look of March

Today was spent sprucing up the house. No, it wasn't spring cleaning, but rather, spring decorating...er, spring living. Some of it was already finished before today, but just has not been shared before. And, some of it is new things that I am trying!

Enjoy!

This is my magnetic memo board- I love it! I used to use it to keep track of who I need to call, but lately I have no problem keeping up with those few people who do the same! So I added a spring colored background, and some B&W from the wedding!

We FINALLY got our prints back from our photographer, six months later! I didn't get to many prints for myself, because I knew that I would rather do a digital book, then have it printed, rather than scrapbook it. I love how the frames turned out, though, I learned something new- frames are expensive!

Changed up our table setting from our "winter theme," which consisted of a glass jar filled with light blue, silver, and white ornaments, and a light blue table runner. I decided to go the cheap way this month, since we don't REALLY celebrate St. Patricks Day, and made the lacemats out of scrapbooking paper and cut out shamrocks. From my classroom, I had all of these gold coins that are scattered on the silver charger, and my lovely green Parker bowl (from Mrs. Angela!,) holds an inexpensive pot of Chrysanthemum's!

Closer look at the handiwork. The placemats aren't really usable for eating on, but they sure do add some color! I'm already working on the ones for next month- easter!!

haha, this was my original March centerpiece. But I hated it! So now it is my banana holder. Usually the green Parker bowl is our fruit bowl, so I just switched the two out.

Mmmmm. I know you have all been dying to try Bakerella's Cookie Brownie Bars, but, if you are like me, you don't want to buy cookie dough AND brownie mix- that's alot of baked goods. Publix had buy one get one on Betty Crocker Brownie mixes, and THIS is one of them!! Yum!

I was super worried about my insationable hunger as of late, and Ian and I figured out some ways to curb it. I guess I am just worried, because I am sitting at home all day now, and I didn't want to put on snacking weight! So I am drinking this protein drink (in milk to fill me more,) instead of a morning snack. In the afternoons, I eat a protein rich Luna or Cliff bar- which I love!

And, these are my "classes," or subjects that I am studying by myself. Sociology, World History, a French Review, Vocabulary, and some online lectures from www.academicearth.org . I am still trying to decide which "course" to take. My interests are in English and History, but I feel like I should diversify a little. Unfortuntely, since academic earth is just getting started, their idea of diversifying in math or science includes topics like Biomedical engineering and Advanced Linear Algebra!! I would like to just find an Algebra book, and work my way through it!

Ahhh yes. I've been doing this work out for a month now (thank you Netflix and your "return whenever," policy!) I LOVE IT. It feels SO good to do, and I can actually see how it is working on sculpting my muscles into longer and leaner- I don't want to bulk up!!
That's it for now! I'd love to add some more, but there is only so much you can do on a limited budget!

Gators, Nachos, and Grading

We spent our Friday night at OUR home, with our friend Sam coming over for a visit, and me falling asleep on the couch around 9/being carried to bed around 11 by my lovely husband and sleeping to 9 the next morning. Oh, it was wonderful. I would have slept longer, but said husband doesn't like to let himself sleep TOO late because he says it makes waking up early on Sunday all the harder, so his alarm went off at 9.

We spent the morning and early afternoon watching Food Network and History Channel, eating cereal (for breakfast,) and omelets (for lunch,) and spending some time cleaning up the house. It's actually gotten pretty messy because of our trip, unpacking, me being sick, and still getting used to my work schedule.

Around 2, we packed up and headed over to see Sam's new place. Not that we haven't seen it before, but that was when it was just his friend's apartment living room. Now that living room is Sam's bedroom and we went to see all of the changes, eat homemade nachos, and watch the SEC championship with his friends.

Have I said lately.....

GO GATORS!

Well, there. I said it. :)

And now, I am on Sam's computer typing this post, taking a break from my mountains of paper grading. I've been trying to get caught up on these worksheets that are titled the "Fab 40" (because there are 40 of them,) and I have to say, adding the term "fabulous," does not make something more exciting. At all.

Anyways, I better get back to that. And see if I can sweet talk my way into ordering some pizzas. Because, no matter what, nachos is not a meal in my book.

Fallen Behind

I've fallen behind on a lot of things lately. Phone Calls, Blog Posts, Book Club Reading, Grocery Shopping, Pumpkin Buying, Emails, Holiday Planning, Reading for Fun, Self Learning (remember my autodidact post?), Exercising(ha!), and Crafting. Nothing seems to be getting done with about a million things left done midway through.

The weekend was great. Lots of relaxation time. We had our friends pick us up a pumpkin from the other side of town, because after an HOUR of driving around, and stopping in at 5 different grocery stores, we found out that A: they were all sold out, and B:There are no pumpkin patches in West Gainesville.

We made a batman pumpkin. :) Pictures to come.

Also coming this week (I Promise!) are pictures from Ian's trip to Budapest, my trip to North Georgia, and a documentation at my first try of banana pudding and apple crisp. Also, the long lost Sam has returned from his GRE studying (he got a score of like, a million, or course) so maybe we'll be seeing our friend again. Plans for next weekend: trip to free community zoo? Another game of tennis? Hiking in the nearby state park? (Do you think I could persuade Ian to go camping?!?) And, of course, loving on the new addition to our family....

A Table!!!

We've been without one now for almost 5 months, and though we don't really mind sitting on the floor, it makes for awkward company dinners, telling them they have to eat on the floor and having the bottle of Resolve nearby in order to promptly treat any carpet stains. Yup. We're going to have a table, and she's going to be SO well dressed, just you wait and see.

Had lunch at Bento's Cafe today with Jim and Kelly from our Sunday school class, and we had a really great time. It's good to be getting to know some people around here.

I have my first day of full substitute teaching on Wednesday as another leg of this VERY long interview process. I guess they just really want to make sure I have what it takes to work in a school that sells pickles for a fundraiser. Oh you think I'm kidding? I'll get a picture one day, you'll see.

Also, I've set a goal for myself to have 100 posts done by the end of the year, so you might be hearing from me a little more often.

Predictable..

I spent my evening hanging out with my husband. We watched an unnamed, totally not dorky television show, had a delicious dinner, and then began my fun.

Cleaning....with Christmas music. I don't know what it is about the music, but it just seems to urge me on. I guess because I associate the music with the Christmas season, preparing fot our celebrations, and all of the busyness that comes with it. I just clean so well with it on.

Wish I would have taken a "before and after" shot of the apartment. For now, it looks sparkley and clean.

On the forecast tomorrow...staying out of the way of the crazy UF and LSU fans. Tennis. Baked apples. Reading The Great Gatsby. Pancake dinner. Working on my annual Christmas ornaments/dreaming up Christmas cards. Watching Persuasions, the movie. Getting our rings cleaned and checked out. Evening walk. Florida game.

Oh, and of course the Georgia game.
Sounds good to me.

Uneventful

Today my day was spent reading, working, cleaning, and working on our puzzle.

Oh, and listening to ridiculous people discuss politics in a very ignorant fashion. From both parties.

And apparently (according to these people) McCain is just going to fall over dead one day because of his four minor cases of melanoma.

Also, I finished the puzzle! I took a picture and then took it apart. I am so glad to have my family room floor back!

Ian had group meetings everyday this week after work and school, so it's basically just been me, on my own, all evening.

Dinners are a little eclectic. I mean, who wants to cook a WHOLE dinner just for yourself? And then not have the ingredients around to cook when there are actual human beings around.

Benefits of having husbandless evenings: lots and lots of DHC "multiples," shows and a little bit of animal cops. Both shows that he is not particularly found of.

Don't worry honey, I will watch Ultimate Fighting Champion later with you.

Feeling the 'gimmes' comming on..

For the past couple o days, I have had the uncontrollable urge to say "oooh, I want that," with every passing glance of storefronts, newspaper ads, and commercials. So, in order to combat the "gimmies," I wanted to let you know a few things I am thankful for.

I am thankful that we have a great working dishwasher and oven.

Along the same lines, I am thankful we were able to move into a safe apartment complex, near a great church, that would probably be given 4 or 5 stars.

I am greatful for our beautiful office, where I escape to in order to turn off of the "wantings." Except when I start looking at our books and researching new books and authors. Then they come back. Haha. But still.

I am thankful that Ian and I both have jobs that are bareable and that are relatively flexible.

I am thankful for my parents paying for my cell phone still so that I can keep in touch with everyone.

I am thankful that I finally got approved as a substitute and am waiting to hear the next step in this process.

More "thankfuls" are coming in November. I plan to list at least one EACH day in November. Which is kind of a double whammy. Not only am I going to come up with more than 30 thanks, but am going to attempt to post everyday for a month.

Taking up the Challenge

In one of the blogs I read, she challeged her readers to pick up their camera and document a week in your life. She also wanted people to scrapbook all of those pictures, but, um, I'm not taking that part of the challenge. Just part one.

So today, starting around 9, I read the blog, and picked up my camera. There may not be alot of typing oing on here (other than captions,) this week, but there sure will be alot of pictures! Want to join me in this challenge?
First thing in the morning, I stumble into the office and check email/news/blogs....
I then got my breakfast around, a newly remembered favorite- just sweet enough but I still feel like it's healthy-ish.
I sit down in front of our TV to watch something mindless (we don't have a table yet,)....
But, alas, there was nothing on, so I take my cereal and go to our room, where my old tv (with the dvd player,) holds a Gilmore Girl disc that I am watching.
Oh boy. Should I or shouldn't I bother washing my hair/ putting in my contacts? Nah, no hair washing. But contacts are definately a must.
My drawer of morning necessities may not look very organized, but, it's the only place in the house that looks like this. Besides.. what am I supposed to do? Have a dozen different baggies full of things?
Here begins the story that all of you married people will laugh and say "i've been there too." It all started when I started on Ian's birthday cake. Mixed the batter and realized I didn't have any round cake pans- except for my ones for cake decorating- but I've only used those a couple oftimes so I am not very used to them. Poured the batter in to two different sizes, put one pan in and then the other one, but it got stuck on the grating and FLIPPED into my oven door.
I think Ian thought I was going to have a heart attack. Not only was it in the hinges of my oven door and dripping down into my pan drawer, but the stuff on the door was beginning to BAKE from the heat of the oven (despite it being turned off.)
Luckily, I thought it was pretty funny, but it was definately that moment where "I just wanted to make him something special but it got ruined!"
It took me awhile to get it all out.
Then I had to whip out another cake mix. Thank goodness for BOGO.
Ian watching Rambo and checking his news sites.
Me joining him for a few minutes and asking a million questions about why a vietnam vet is running from the law in US soil and hurting cops. I just don't get it.
PJ's in the kitchen. Still working on the cake. I need more frosting. It wasn't BOGO. I'll pick that up tomorrow.
Fall candles to make our home look homey. As soon as possible I'm getting a fall wreath for the door. I've got my eye on you Target fall wreath. Just you watch.

Just a quickie...

It's been a good week and today has been pretty great.

Fall has definately arrived, though I have been told that it comes and goes for the next two months before settling in, just in time for Christmas, haha.

We have spent the last three days with the windows open, air off, and wondeful cinnamon candles burning to give us that "fall," smell. My momma used to put out those cinnamon brooms by the air intake and the whole house would just smell like deliciousness.

Today was pretty busy, but in a really relaxed way. I went shopping for Ian's birthday (next Wednesday,) and did my Target and Publix shopping as well. I did have to go back through the line 3 times at Target, only because I kept forgetting stuff, and since it IS a whole highway exit down from us, I figured I better take care of it now.

Tasks for the day
  • Laundry-check
  • Birthday shopping- check
  • Grocery Shopping
  • Grocery unloading (this takes, like, an hour with the stairs and locked doors,)
  • Gift wrapping- check
  • Dinner making for hubby and his best friend (a very delicious pulled pork)- check
  • Reading of chapter in book that I am not so sure in-check
  • Watching political debate- check
  • Deciding to read a book on economics (Basic Economics) - check
  • Playing Monopoly and losing- check check
  • Heading for bed- check

50th Post!

Now, that doesn't sound like alot compared to these "super blogs," who blog like, twice a day, but on the whole, I think that each post I have done has told a story and isn't all about the contests and such that others do, so I am glad that, including today, I have told the story of at least 50 days of my life on here. I hope you've liked the journey as well!

The weekend has been glorious, as predicted. Ian and I had a dinner date with a couple from church on Friday evening at a mexican restaurant, and then we came home and went for a long walk around our apartment complex. I spent some time in my french book, learning, then hopped on over to work for a three hour stint at what was supposed to be a book release party.

There was no party, trust me. I was allowed to leave at about 11:30 because we had like 10 customers and 12 employees. I was happy to leave, even if I lost an hour and a half of potential pay.

Also, free soda night at work has the potential for making me very hyper. Not so much because of the sugar involved, but just the thought of FREE food and drink. Besides, it was diet coke, how hyper could I really get off of that?

Today was spent laying around the house, reading, watching tv, running to the grocery store, trying to figure out how to make chilli (more on that tomorrrow,) watching football for almost 8 hours straight, talking to friends on the phone, writing a million notes to friends and families (check your mailbox around Tuesday or Wednesday,) and, in the evening, sitting on the back porch reading, with a cool breeze blowing through my nonfrizzy (since there is no humidity right now,) hair.

It was beautiful.

I hope your Saturday was wonderful too.

I can just smell it...

Fall is on its way. And. I've heard rumors, that here in Gville we actually GET a fall! And sooner! I might be a little premature in saying this, but I bet in 2-3 weeks it will be full swing fall here in town. The air smells different. Not so....full of moisture or full or hot air. Or full of swamp stink.

And no, I don't mean The Swamp, as in, where the Gators play. That would be sacrilege.

Today is looking to be a day of errands. I get to turn in ALL of my paperwork to get the ball rolling on this long term substitute position, and hopefully I can get my fingerprint and drug test done today as well, though I am not holding my breath. Anyone who has applied for anything knows that if you have everything ready to turn in, they will just give you 3 more things and tell you to come back in a week. But, I am slightly optimistic.

To do: includes possibly mopping the floors, (but since I like hand mopping better, as in, with a rag on my hands and knees, this takes alot longer,) and dusting the office. I am so proud of myself for accomplishing the seemingly impossible yesterday. In thirty minutes I vaccuumed the house, folded 2 loads of laundry, loaded and started the dishwasher, washed all of the pots and pans, and straightened up the countertop/desktop! So much less to do today!

Also on the to do list is to finish reading my book Out of the Silent Planet, by CS Lewis, and begin reading The Pearl, by John Steinbeck. If you want to join in for this mini book club (the book isonly 86 pgs long, and will only last about 3 weeks, so it's not too huge of a commitment,) hop on over to Bound to Books.

More updates to come about our dinner date with a couple from Sunday school, and the book release party that I work, from 8pm to 1am toninght! Should be fun! Lots of dragon loving book fiends running around my store doing weird stuff.

The STINK...

Beware mothers of small children, hide all naive noses. "Gird your loins"

There is a stink in the Galloway house, and has been for about 2-3 weeks now. I didn't notice it until this past weekend, and then I realized everything smelled like mildow, the carpet, clothes, air, etc. Since then I have set out to avenge my household's air and fabric's from the offending stink.

Changed the air filter, washed almost all of our clothes, vaccuumed, dusted, windexed, and burned an excessive amount of glade candles and I think I have just about knocked it out.

Just call me SuperBrittney, avenger of odious odors.

Think I need a cape?

I do.

A good smelling cape.

The Interview

I really haven't been up to much, so I don't have an excuse for the lack of posting, except for, it's been pretty dull around here so my posts would sound like this :

"Not much is going on around here. I have plenty of options of things to do to entertain me, and I don't really feel like doing any of them. And for some reason, the things I DO want to do, all need money, so those aren't really options right now. *Sigh* We're jonesing for some tv."

Yup, and that would be about it for the last four or five days.

But hopefully today will be a little different. You see, yesterday, I had TWO interviews, praise God. The first one was for a sixth and seventh grade math position, but for only two periods, but you get sixty percent of the pay and you have no classroom. I did well in the interview, but I am really hoping they pick someone else so I don't have to reject them. I hate rejection.

The second one was much better but a little stranger. It's for the next county over for a school that services only 3rd-5th grade, but it has over 500 kids! 11 3rd grade classrooms, doesn't that blow you mind? Anyways, it's out in the middle of nowhere, but is only a 20-30 minute picturesque drive. The position is for replacing a teacher who is leaving on maternity leave in the next month or two and would become a permanent position for the rest of the year. So, essentially it would be my classroom come Thanksgiving. Only hitch is, since the county is so, um, close knit, they don't just hire anyone. You have to become, like, family, before they will hire you, so I have all of this paperwork to do to become a substitute.

Luckily, they are acting like I will get the job. They introduced me to the teacher leaving, as "the teacher who will probably be taking over your classroom." I got to sit in on her class for 2 hours, which made me realize even more how much I miss it.

I'm counting it as a blessing though, that I will have to wait a month or two. I needto brush up on the 3rd grade (since I never had an internship there,) and on my English as a Second Language techniques since there are TWO boys who speak absolutely no english.

I also have a ton of paperwork that I want to get sent out, like, pronto. So I think Ian and I are going to tackle that today.

Not alot of housework to do, since Ian and I did most of it yesterday. We also had a delicious dinner of Morroccan chicken and hummus, with brownie and cherry frozen yogurt sundaes yesterday. Sam came over for dinner and Friday night activities, which included working on our insane puzzle and watching The Office/Tristan and Isolde. I fell asleep before 11 but I think those boys kept at it for another 2 hours.

Now to find some breakfast.
