Europe Revisited- Part One- London

In the summer of 2006, I had the opportunity of a lifetime-to go to Western Europe and see London, Oxford, Normandy, and Paris!

I went with Student Leadership University, an amazing leadership group that trains student up in the premise of "Five years from now, you will be the same person you are today except for the People you Meet, the Places you Go, and the Books you Read." So they take you to all sorts of crazy places, introduce you to important people, and recommend a boat load of books!

So, over the next several days, I will be recapping my trip here, since I never really said much about it afterwards (it was pre-blogging days.)

Before I start, however, let me recap by reminding you of THIS post, (please oh please someone read it! It was some of my best work and NO one commented on it!) about how incredibly sick I was on this trip. I was diagnosed with my second bout of strep throat less than 24 hours before departure. (remember Dad? You took me to the urgent care center on Memorial day? *sigh* My dad is the best!) Right. So, I was very drugged up and did not care too much for taking pictures. Just was in kind of a cloudy haze for most of the trip, which was really unfortunate. SO, I don't have ANY pictures of St.Paul's Cathedral, hardly any of the city, and only 2 fro mWestminster Abbey. It's a crying shame I tell ya!

Three of my best friends from high school (this was a year after graduation!) This was taken at a "night club," where we had dinner before going to see Les Miserables on London Broadway (not really sure the technical name of it!)

It's official. I am the best friend. Ever. I "proposed," to Katie on the steps of Buckingham castle! Or, at least the gates of it.

We're buds.

HAHAHA, this is one of my favorite pictures of all times. You see, the whole theme of this trip should have been "Go more places, eat less food," so anytime we came upon food we were simply famished! (in fact, ben here, carried a loaf of banana bread around in his back pack for nourishment during this trip. I, snuck in and ate at least half of it!) Right, so we were taken down into this dank dark dungeon of a place and given this nasty loaf of bread and this pitcher of "lemonade," aka Airborne in a pitcher. It was gross, and we were not appreciative.

Jessica and I at the Winston Churchill museum (one of my favorites! I highly recommend it!) looking all stern with... a was person. Not really sure who that was.

The British Library! A really neat quick stop, which was somewhat near the British Museum, and we saw some VERY important historical documents. Due to the medical haze, I don't remember much of this part of the trip.

Oh, the British Museum. My favorite. Seriously. More than the Louvre, in Paris. Honest to goodness one of the best museums ever.

A little bit of Egyptian history for ya! Unfortunately, I lost interest in taking pictures, (darn you Benedryl!)

Part of The Tower of London! Where the crown jewels were stored and a very neat "living history museum," was. Also, nearby was the River Thames and the "London Bridge," which is actually called The Tower Bridge, and the real "London Bridge," in the middle of the Arizona desert. I'm serious. A rich man bought it and had it moved there. We're weird, us Americans.

HEY! It's us and a Bobby...bobbie? I don't really know. It was some national holiday and there was a military parade right outside of the Winston Churchill museum, so, naturally, we bugged them for a picture.

Um. That's a gate. And, taken out of context of my photo files, I have no idea what it goes to. I think, either Buckingham Palace, or Westminster Abbey. PS, we didn't get to see Big Ben (except from a distance.) Sad.

The Abbey. Anyone everseen Friends, when they are in London? Joey calls Chandler "Westminster Crabby," and, in my medical haze, I thought that was flippin hilarious on this particular day. Said it over and over to myself.

Now, this gate I recognize! Part of the detail work on Buckingham Palace.

Harrods!! I still want to go in there! This picture was taken from a bus window. I'm not even sure if that's the real place.

All in all, it was a great leg of the trip. We had an amazing tour guide, named Ralph, who became very attached to us girls (don't worry, he was like, 40,) and we even got to hear from Winston Churchill's grandson! AND we got to go into a "Royal," society building. I think it was the Royal Automobile Club, which, having the word "royal," attached to it means that an actual memeber of the royal family is part of it! woo HOO.

Also. I saw a man in a kilt.

I about passed out.

Then, I took a picture of it.

That will come later.

I Like It, I Love It, I Want Some More of It- #2

I know, I know, this is a little obscure for some of you:

Let me back up and explain what it is!

About 8 years ago, the highly esteemed (ha!) Orlando Sentinel began including "Get Fuzzzy" comics in with their usual Sunday comics. After connecting the main characters with our dog and our cat, I was hooked! No, my animals couldn't talk (duh!) but their personalities matched exactly!

Alright, that's a little fuzzy, but if you head over to HERE, you can read the comics for free! Or. You know. Go to a bookstore, pull an entire book off the shelf and read it without buying it. Ya know, something like that! (note: I do not condone doing said action, after all, I worked in a bookstore, and people who do that are.. um... oh, alright, go ahead!)

On a side note, I usually take the day-to-day calendar, and read like 20 pages in a row. Then I don't touch it for along time, so it doesn't really function as a calendar here in the Galloway household. More on that later.

Blogging Book Goal- Book #6

Remember my reading goal for the year? 50 books. A little ambitious, I know, but I really think I can do it! I am only 2 books behind right now, and heaven knows I have alot of time on my hands!

Also:

Curses to you John Steinbeck! I have been stuck on East of Eden for 1 month now! I am just very not interested in it I think. But, I have made up my mind to finish it by Sunday night. We'll see.

So, for my sixth book, after setting aside Mr. Steinbeck, I picked up C.S. Lewis' A Grief Observed:

I've worked my way through most of C.S. Lewis' mainstream works (all of the Chronicles of Narnia, Screwtape Letters, The Problem of Pain, and Mere Christianity,) so all I needed to finish was A Grief Observed, The Great Divorce, and Miracles (which we don't have yet.) Naturally, I picked the smallest one possible.

My cure for a reading road block, is to simply put it aside, and find a book that you can get through as quick as possible ie, A Grief Observed.

The book is the journaling of Lewis after the loss of his wife to cancer. It is not in a typical writing style, and is somewhat hard to follow, because he wrote it like he would carry a conversation. Also, there are no pauses or breaklines in between his entries, they are just all mashed together, so it is a little incoherent mostly. Sometimes he'll say something like "That was last night. Now...." So you know that the stuff immediately preceeding that was from a different day.

Weird, eh?

Right. But besides all that, I really liked it. It is a pretty depressing book, hearing one of our centuries' greatest author doubt the existence and goodness of God, but is reassuring, because it reminds you that he WAS human. In the end Lewis reconciles all of his doubts in a really powerful chapter.

I'm gonna tuck this one away, and read it again nearer a personal tragedy. I think I will be able to connect with it more then.

(Almost) Worldless Wednesday

Katie and I, three years ago, at Normandy Beach, France, on DDay.
We....
um....
fell into a bunker.

And landed on briars.

And I was slightly horrified/hysterical.

More on my Europe trip coming this week!

The Look of March

Today was spent sprucing up the house. No, it wasn't spring cleaning, but rather, spring decorating...er, spring living. Some of it was already finished before today, but just has not been shared before. And, some of it is new things that I am trying!

Enjoy!

This is my magnetic memo board- I love it! I used to use it to keep track of who I need to call, but lately I have no problem keeping up with those few people who do the same! So I added a spring colored background, and some B&W from the wedding!

We FINALLY got our prints back from our photographer, six months later! I didn't get to many prints for myself, because I knew that I would rather do a digital book, then have it printed, rather than scrapbook it. I love how the frames turned out, though, I learned something new- frames are expensive!

Changed up our table setting from our "winter theme," which consisted of a glass jar filled with light blue, silver, and white ornaments, and a light blue table runner. I decided to go the cheap way this month, since we don't REALLY celebrate St. Patricks Day, and made the lacemats out of scrapbooking paper and cut out shamrocks. From my classroom, I had all of these gold coins that are scattered on the silver charger, and my lovely green Parker bowl (from Mrs. Angela!,) holds an inexpensive pot of Chrysanthemum's!

Closer look at the handiwork. The placemats aren't really usable for eating on, but they sure do add some color! I'm already working on the ones for next month- easter!!

haha, this was my original March centerpiece. But I hated it! So now it is my banana holder. Usually the green Parker bowl is our fruit bowl, so I just switched the two out.

Mmmmm. I know you have all been dying to try Bakerella's Cookie Brownie Bars, but, if you are like me, you don't want to buy cookie dough AND brownie mix- that's alot of baked goods. Publix had buy one get one on Betty Crocker Brownie mixes, and THIS is one of them!! Yum!

I was super worried about my insationable hunger as of late, and Ian and I figured out some ways to curb it. I guess I am just worried, because I am sitting at home all day now, and I didn't want to put on snacking weight! So I am drinking this protein drink (in milk to fill me more,) instead of a morning snack. In the afternoons, I eat a protein rich Luna or Cliff bar- which I love!

And, these are my "classes," or subjects that I am studying by myself. Sociology, World History, a French Review, Vocabulary, and some online lectures from www.academicearth.org . I am still trying to decide which "course" to take. My interests are in English and History, but I feel like I should diversify a little. Unfortuntely, since academic earth is just getting started, their idea of diversifying in math or science includes topics like Biomedical engineering and Advanced Linear Algebra!! I would like to just find an Algebra book, and work my way through it!

Ahhh yes. I've been doing this work out for a month now (thank you Netflix and your "return whenever," policy!) I LOVE IT. It feels SO good to do, and I can actually see how it is working on sculpting my muscles into longer and leaner- I don't want to bulk up!!
That's it for now! I'd love to add some more, but there is only so much you can do on a limited budget!

Coffee House Chat

Tonight, Ian and I took a visitor to our Sunday School class out for coffee. First of all, we both fell in love with this idea! It was so easy to do, because everyone likes coffee (or at least the coffee house atmosphere!!) so they are not really going to turn you down. And what a great way to say "welcome to our church, we are interested in YOU!"

Right. So we sat and talked with this guy, with two other sunday school members for an hour and a half, and it was alot of fun.

Best of all, was the stories that people had to tell. I love learning about people and their lives. Too bad I am so darn shy.

What?!? You didn't know I was shy? Well, I am. In fact, I about peed in my pants laughing, this weekend, when my brother-in-laws girlfriend told me she thought I was the outgoing, carefree one, out of my sister and I.

Heather about had a heartattack too, when she heard.

Right. So I am not outgoing. Nor carefree. Though I really am working on it! I've gotten alot more "laid back," in my old age, haha. Trust me. Just ask anyone who knew me five years ago, I was much more, um, high strung.

Acck. I'm having a hard time getting my words out right tonight.

Focus, Brittney, Focus.

So we are in the coffee house, when Jake (sunday school guy,) asks the new guy if he's married (new guy has a wedding ring on.)

New guy (yes, I do know his name- I'm 'protecting' his identity people!) tells us something shocking!

He's not married.
But he does work in a hospital.
And he wears an actual wedding ring to keep, um, interested gentlemen away from him.

What?!?!
We were all shocked, but, according to new guy, this is quite a problem in health care.
In fact, he had to transfer hospitals because of it.

Poor soul.
Just trying to be a woman lover like God says to be.

We stayed pretty shocked over that for awhile.

THEN, I heard the nursing students at the table next to us, talking VERY loudly through their notes.

Apparently, according to their textbook, people can be genetically disposed for a need for organized religion.

.....

Um. I really wanted to tap them on the shoulder and have a conversation with them.
It would go something like this:

Me: Um, Hi! I couldn't help but overhear your studying.
Them: Oh, we're sorry for being so obnoxiously loud with our note reading.
Me: Oh, no problem! I was really just interested in the bunch of crap that your book is feeding you!
Them: Really? Which part?
Me: The part about genetically predisposed for religion. Do you really believe that?
Them: Oh yes. Oh yes! We are college students. Therefore we get to be ignorant about all things...logical. Of course we believe that!
Me: Alright, as long as you know it makes no logical sense!
Them: Oh yes, we know perfectly well. But, after all, we're college students! Who needs logic!

Been listening to the soundtrack from McMama's photography website. I need to track down some of these artists! I especially like the French stuff.

The House that Love Built

Dear home at Cracker Creek Court,

You are such a welcoming site,

with your Giant Oak trees in the front, (they started out smaller than I!)

And your back porch for lazy hazy crazy days of summer. Remember when mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa built me and Heather a play house out back? It used to sit right where that shed now sits.

Heather got the room with "the windowseat," and she thought she was hot stuff... Too bad the seat was only five inches wide!!! and here's a very washed out picture of my room. I got the "big room," because when we moved into it, I was still in the toy age, and needed lots of play room.

Our little bathroom. So clean and white. So many hours of preparation went down here. For proms, homecomings, first dates, proposal, an finally for my wedding!

Oh, the piano. Where hours and hours of practice went on. With your giant creepy pictures of Heather and I above it, this was not my favorite spot, but how I miss it now.

The living room, where we would place the Christmas tree each year, and where Brandy's (our dog) cage resided for most of the time.

The laundry room! This room had a LOT of work done it over the years, and turned out very nicely. I don't havee a lot to say about this room though.

Our kitchen with my cookin' Mama! Almost everything in that place was put in by my parents from scratch. (except for some of the cabinets!)

The living room, where (still) so many sports games, tv shows, movies, and conversations took place.

Our dining room, with Mom's beautiful antique table and awesome sunlight. I don't think I could count all of the special meals that we had here.

This house had it all, but, most importantly, it had:

My Sister,
Myself,

My Momma,

And my Daddy.
This is the house that Love built.
Thank you dear, dear house, for your 14 years of loving care.
We will miss you!
(My parents just moved to Nashville, TN, for those of you who are wondering.)
